The programme combines some of the best destinations with some really wild desert travel on old caravan tracks. Journey through the most beautiful and untouched part of the Sahara including visit to the oasis Ghadames. There are several days involving driving long distances over tough terrain. Every day there are plenty of opportunities for a few hours walking from campsite and during lunch stops. You camp far away from any zivilisation and mostly in prestine countryside. All meals are cooked for you and the evenings will be spent around campfires under a starry sky. Included in the itinerary are a days trip to Sabratha and one day in Tripoli.
Day 1
Arrival in Tripoli.
Welcome by your guide and transfer to the hotel
Day 2
Drive by a/c car or minibus from Tripoli to Ghadames (611km). Stop in the berber village Nalut, on the top of the Dschebel Nafusah. Visit a well preserved ancient old Qasr (fortified granary) and a mosque. Exellent views down to the plains below. After lunch head to Ghadames, passing large plateaus, a few oasis, and get the first impression of the dimension and authenty of the Great Sahara. Evening in Ghadames. O/n in a hotel or guest house.
Day 3
the pearl of the oasis at the Libyan-Tunisian border. Morning guidance through the museum and the old part of the town with their close, shady lanes, flowering gardens, a labyrinth of narrow, partly bent loambuidlings. Unesco World Cultural Heritage. Around lunchtime start of your desert experience by 4x4 wheel Toyota Landcruiser direction Idri passing Darj before heading south-east across the Hamadat al Hamrah (red stone desert). Tent.

Acacus
Day 4 6
Continue across the Hamadat al Hamrah, following the old caravan track going down to the open desert to Hassi Nahia waterhole and sand dunes, to a dramatic escarpment before plunging down to plains the rugged escarpment behind and drive over a sand desert to camp amongst dunes and small rocky hills, than driving through magnificent wild scenery till you reach finally Idri with its old mud town and castle nearby slowly collapsing away. This route is the best what the Sahara does offer and leaves an unforgettable impression. In Birgen refresh provision, water, patrol before heading south through the Zellaf National Reserve. Tent.
Day 7
Head through dunes to reach a beautiful oasis with palms and a waterhole. Nearby magnificent dunes offer a fine walk during the lunch break. Now a short, tough drive takes you towards the Ubari Lakes in the midst of very high dunes and to a refreshing swim in the lake Umm al Maa. Camp in the dunes near Germa. Tent.
Day 8
Visit Germa museum and the ruins of ancient Garama. Head west through wadi Adjal with a lunch break in the wild desert. Campsite in dunes just short of Ghat offering excellent views of the Acacus. Tent.
Day 9
Morning visit the Ghat medina with the ancient fortress Koukemen on the top. Lunch outside Ghat before you drive south along the Algerian border to the entrance of the Acacus at Wadi Ayad. Continue amongst rugged mountains to Takharkhory and camp in dunes amongst dramatic cliffs. Should this passage be closed due to fesh-fesh (soft, deep sand), then route via the north entrance Al Awaynat/Awees. Tent.
Day 10
Exciting journey inside the Acacus mountains with its famous rock paintings in shallow caves or under overhangs (Unesco World Cultural Heritage) in Wadi Awees and Tashwuinat. Tent.
Day 11
Morning visit to further famous cave art in Imha and Tanshel and see bizarre rock formations such as the Afzeghar Arch (other name: Fozzigiaren). After lunch heading east to the characteristic sharp summit of Tini Farfar and Tini Kammet passing old caravan tracks. Here is the place where tha famous movie "Lion of the Desert" with Anthony Quinn as main actor was partly made. It tells the story about the Libyan National Hero Omar Mokhtar. Camp in the dunes of Abohawa. Tent.
Day 12
See some excellent rock engravings in Abohawa, then head through the black desert towards Wadi Mathandosh to see many of the innumerable prehistoric animal carvings for this place is famous. After lunch drive to the Murzuq dunes for the night camp. Tent.
Day 13
Along the way visit part of the great Wadi Barjuj irrigation scheme. A further wonderful offroad journey along the Murzuq dunes ends in Maknusa. After lunch drive on tarmac to Sebha to see the camel market. Time at leisure or to visit a local farm with a variety of animals and crops - an insight into what can be achieved in the desert given water. Evening meal in a restaurant and fly back to Tripoli. Day 14
Morning visit to the National Museum (Mitaf al-Jamarhiriya) in the ancient castle at the green square with its rich collection of artefacts from all periods of Libya's long history. By bus transfer to Sabratha. Guidance through the museum with extraordinary floor mosaics and one of the most beautiful archaeological sites of the world with its well preserved three floor theatre. Unesco World Heritage. Evening back to Tripoli. Farewell Dinner in an atmospheric restaurant. Hotel.
Day 15
Departure Day. Transfer to the airport and fly home.
