Programme as PDF (download)

The programme combines some of the best objects of interest with a few days trekking in the Acacus mountains, one of the most fascinating and magnificent areas of Libya. They contain some of the world’s best examples of cave art, some dating back 12’000 years (Unesco World Culture Heritage). Walking through this area of bizarr rockformations and black mountains bedded in gentle golden sand dunes is a breathtaking adventure far away from any civilisation. Visitors enjoy the beauty of silence, the colours of magical dawns and sunsets, the gentle fire that warms the cold desert nights, while you sleep beneath a tent of stars, lit only by the silvery moon. It is here that you must come to discover how man can live in total symbiosis with his surroundings, respecting the environment. Included in the itinerary is a days trip to Leptis Magna.

Day 1
Arrive in Tripoli. Evening flight to Sebha. Transfer to the hotel.

Day 2
By 4 x 4 vehicle to Ghat on the Libyan-Algerian border. Visit this lifely commercial Tuareg centre with its bazaars, ancient fortress and old town. Head to Al Awaynat and Awees at the entrance to the Acacus National Park. From now on you will be camping.

Day 3 to 8
You will trek with a Tuareg guide through this magnificent untouched wilderness with plenty of time to explore the wadis with their superb cave paintings. The most famous of these is Wadi Tashwuinat which is almost 60 kms long. On most days you will get up at sunrise, have an early breakfast and pack your belongings which will be taken by vehicle to the next campsite while you walk for 3 to 4 hours to the lunch spot. On hot days you will take a longer lunch break, on cooler ones you may start walking earlier in the afternoon and walk for 2 to 3 hours before your evening camp. A camel will carry the lunch and your day bags.

Day 9
Goodbye Acacus, goodbye Tuareg guide. Drive east through the beautiful Wan Casa dunes to camp in the Murzuq Dunes – the largest sand dune area in the world. After a stop near the Abohawa passage to see some excellent rock engravings you head toward your camp in the Murzuq sand dunes.

Day 10
You cross a short section of sand, then a black stone desert to the eastern end of Wadi Mathandoush. You then trek through the wadi to where your vehicle is waiting for you with lunch. There will be plenty of time to explore the wadi and see many of the prehistoric animal carvings. After lunch drive to camp in the Murzuq sand dunes.
