The programme combines some of the most magnificent highlights of Libya with an expedition journey through really wild desert into the heart of the Sahara. Beside several days involving going ahead long distances over tough terrain, there will be always plenty of opportunities for walking, during lunch stops and from campsites. Your camp will be away from other people and mostly in pristine countryside. All meals are cooked for you and the evenings will be spent around camp fires under a starry sky. Included in the itinerary are the famous Acacus mountains, the picturesque Ubari lakes in the midst of high dunes, a days trip to Leptis Magna and one day in charming Tripoli.
Day 1
Arrive in Tripoli not later than 3 p.m. Evening flight to Sebha, in the heart of the Sahara. Hotel.
Day 2 to 5
Start of an exciting expedition towards south by 4x4 wheel cars. From now on you will camp in the wild desert, away from people, experiencing intensively the silence and the dimension of the Great Sahara. On the way to Waw an Namus you pass Tmessah with its kilometers of palm-studded dunes. Waw an Namus is a dead volcano with several stunning crater lakes to see and swim in. The volcano offers a pleasant walk. On your return journey you will head out west towards the greatest sand desert – the Murzuq Dunes and passing in Zueila the famous seven graves , As Sabaha, of followers of prophet Mohammed. Tent.
Day 6
Cross a short section of the white and black desert to Wadi Mathandoush. There you will have plenty of time to explore the wadi and see many of the innumerable prehistoric animal carvings for which it is famous. After lunch go ahead to a camp in the Murzuq Dunes. Tent.
Day 7
Your journey takes you over a black stone desert and dry wadis along the Msak Settafit passing the impressive stone formation Tini Farfar and Tini Kammet, crossing old caravan tracks and the beautiful Wan Casa dunes before you will arrive in one of the most magnificent area of the Sahara , the Acacus mountains. Day 8 to 9
You will have to explore some of the endless wadis of the Acacus with their occasional Tuareg communities, numerous pre-historic rock carvings and paintings depicting scenes of a much lusher past (Unesco World Culture Heritage). Tent.
Day 10
Leaving Acacus you will pass “Adad” the thumb of Tuareg. Stop in the oasis Al Awaynat to refresh provision, and patrol before you head back east towards Germa where to visit the local museum and the historic old city. Late afternoon enter in the Ubari sandsea. Camp near the lake Umm el Maa. Tent.
Day 11
Visit the picturesque Ubari lakes (Mandara, Umm el Maa), one of the top highlights of Libya.Swimming in the very salty water is pure fun! Later to continue to your camp in the dunes near Zellaf. Tent.
Day 12
Wonderful drive through the palm-studded Zellaf National Reserve to Wadi Asc Shati and later to Sebha where you will have a traditional meal with a local bedouin family. Evening domestic flight back to Tripoli and transfer to your hotel.
Day 13
Beautiful drive along the Mediterranean Coast to Leptis Magna, the best preserved Roman site outside Rome. Unesco World Culture Heritage. After lunch visit the local museum and Villa Selene before returning to Tripoli. Dinner and night in restaurant or hotel.
Day 14
Morning visit to the National Museum (Mitaf al-Jamarhiriya) in the ancient castle at the green square with its rich collection of artefacts from all periods of Libya's long history. By bus transfer to Sabratha. Guidance through the museum with extraordinary floor mosaics and one of the most beautiful archaeological sites of the world with its well preserved three floor theatre. Unesco World Heritage. Evening back to Tripoli. Farewell dinner in an atmospheric restaurant. Overnight in the hotel.
Day 15
Transfer to the airport and fly home.
